(July 22, 2020) Kelly and Dorothy Simes of 50 Feeley Drive wish to make a motion at the upcoming AGM to change the current name of Feeley Drive to Sunset Bay.
Response to the Simes’ Poposal to change the name of Feeley Drive
As property owners on Feeley Drive, we would like to respond to the Simes’ proposal to change our street name.
Feeley Drive is one of several place names around the lake which honoured former MLA’s and others who contributed to the early development of Crystal Lake, including such names as Johnny’s Beach, Black Place, Kuziak Bay and Anderson Lane. They are a tribute to and recognition of their namesakes’ contributions to developing our community.
Feeley Drive is named after Myron Feeley who was elected MLA for Canora constituency in l938 – at the height of the Great Depression. He homesteaded west of Crystal Lake in 1903. He was active in the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool and the local school board. He served as MLA for 10 years.
Mr. Feeley was recently honoured by the Town of Preeceville and the Preeceville Wildlife Federation with the naming of “Myron Feeley Park”. The plaque in his honour credits him with being a leading advocate for enactment of The Farm Security Act which protected farm families against foreclosure of their home quarter.
The Simes’ proposal suggests that the name change would be as simple as replacing the street signs. That is not the case. Street names are part of survey plans registered with the Land Tiles Office (Information Services Corporation). Steps would need to be taken with the Land Titles Office to effect a name change. The Ministry of Highways and the Provincial Emergency Communications Centre, among others, would need to be updated of the name changes to ensure that provincial databases have up-to-date information. These various steps are required to ensure emergency vehicles can accurately locate their destination.
In addition, as property owners we have various utility services that reference our existing civic address. As follow up, we would need to ensure that civic addresses with SaskPower, SaskTel, SaskEnergy, Shaw cable, and security service providers, are accurate. This puts an unnecessary burden on each property owner.
In closing, we oppose the proposal for a name change. There is nothing unique about “Sunset Bay”; there are hundreds around the world. The names around Crystal Lake have historic significance. We should recognize and respect all the historic contributors who developed Crystal Lake.
Respectfully submitted,
Myron and Dianne Gulka-Tiechko
Thank you for your concern. We in no way want to take away from any historical contributions anyone has given to our beautiful lake,,however this area of the lake was owned by the CCF /NDP party when we purchased our cottage in 1972 .Since becoming owners of our property in the 80s we wanted the name of our area to reflect the true nature of it …..Sunset Bay ….Thank you
The form “Application for Plan Amendment change should be completed by the RM of Keys No 303 and submitted to ISC along with a certified copy of the bylaw or resolution passed by the RM showing the street to be amended.Once the street name is amended Highways and Provincial Emergency Communication Centre
should be advised of street name change by RM
Sask Tel ,Sask Power, Sask Energy will all be notified of address change per the RM and updated. There is no cost involved. Thank you for all of your concerns.
With regards to the motion to change the name of Feeley Dr.
I am opposed to this motion
Hello!
Response to the Poposal to change the name of Feeley Drive:
As property owners on Feeley Drive, we would also like to respond to the proposal to change the street name.
We are indifferent to what the name of the Drive is, however it is a fact that individual cabin owners will incur a cost to update/replace any of their personal custom signage on their cabins. Due to the indifference, we have no desire to incur any costs to update naming and we assume other cabin owners who are in a similar situation would not like to do so either if they are of the same opinion.
In conclusion, we oppose the proposal for a name change. However thank you to the folks who prepared and brought this proposal forward.
Respectfully submitted,
Krista & Mike Sali

We are indifferent to what the name of the Drive actually is. Our concern is that individual cabin owners will incur a cost to update/change their individual custom signage (which may be metal, wood, painted, etc. – often not a simple, quick or cheap fix).
Due to the fact that a cost would be incurred by the applicable individual cabin owners, and our indifference to what the name of the Drive is, we Oppose the proposal for a name change.
Thank you however to those who took the time and effort to submit this proposal

I am in favour of changing the name to Sunset Bay. We have Lakeshore, Beach Crescent, Lakeview, Crystal Bay thén a big switch to Feeley and Kuziak. It doesn’t make sense. The names should really reflect who we are- a vibrant, caring community not connected to a political past. Perhaps we should rename one of our streets to honour the indigenous people who lived here for many centuries before we moved in.
Hi. Further to the street change if anybody runs a business with the Feeley street address they would now incur a cost to change letterhead, phone book listing, any advertising, updates to customers, business cards etc. I am opposed to changing the name.
I vote for name change to Sunset Bay.
